As one of the more versatile means of expressing oneself out on the golf course (and off the course as well), shirts continue to “stretch” the fashion boundaries.
What we’d like to do with this story is provide our readers with insights about Tops with excerpts from my recent interview with an industry expert and the son of a golf legend. Established in 2020, Super Mex Golf is a legacy apparel brand by one of the greatest golfers to have ever played the game, the man known as “Super Mex,” (for his Hispanic heritage), Lee Trevino. His World Golf Hall of Fame career included 92 professional wins including six major championships.
confident playing style, personality, and origin story, capturing Lee’s spirit and lifelong love of the game. Super Mex Golf off ers a modern take on classic looks through innovative materials and design, in our range of polos, shirts, bottoms, outerwear, and accessories that can be worn on or off the course Proudly based in Dallas, TX, and rooted in Texas golf history, Daniel Trevino, Lee’s son, is the founder Super Mex Golf.
Tell us a little about what is trending in shirts these days in terms of colors and patterns :
DT: Our brand direction and story has been inspired by the ‘Golden Age’ of golf, when my father was playing back in the late 60’s through the mid 80’s. Fashion was a great mix of classic traditional looks while still being fun, bold, and expressing the personality of the player – a lot of those trends are coming back and it’s great to see!

The Mexico Fun Stripe Polo from Super Mex Golf is an updated nod to the founder’s father, Lee Trevino, who not only conveyed cultural pride in this model, but also reminds golfers of the great personality of the legendary player who liked to have fun on and off the course. The lightweight poly-spandex polo features four-way stretch, moisture-wicking, anti-microbial and UPF 30+ sun protection.

Featuring an asymmetrical stripe of camo print that wraps from front to back along with a black perforated stripe, PXG’s new Digital Camo Polo brings a modern style to the tee box or office.

This new, lightweight Sea Shark Stretch Polo will keep you cool and comfortable even on the warmest days thanks to its moisture-wicking and UPF 50+ sun protection fabric technology.

For us, we are going off of favorite colorways from Lee’s career, and recreating them today in more modern fabrics and trims. (I don’t think you will see a 4” collar anymore, however!). Our Mexico Fun Stripe polo was a play on a shirt design he wore in the 80’s, and we thought it would be a super fun personality piece to go with the collection. On the other hand, classic blues, purples and our staple white are the core of the classically inspired Lee Trevino Signature Series.
Performance is key, so what materials offer optimum production?
DT: Over the past decade in the golf space, the rise of ‘performance fabrics’ has taken over. Polyester based blends are off ered by every company in the space, and it does allow for treatments such as anti-microbial, moisture wicking, 4-way stretch, UPF ratings and more.
Nevertheless, I have noticed that good ‘ol cotton is still highly valued.
DT: Where we see opportunity is in the cotton blended polo. The fact of the matter is, off the golf course (going out to dinner, to a friends house, every day life), a performance polyester golf polo does not look as classic as a cotton polo. By combining Pima Cotton or Supima Cotton with a bit of spandex, nylon etc. you are able to produce a shirt that won’t pill, it won’t lose it’s shape when stretched or shrink when washed, and will be much softer to the touch. The look comes out much cleaner and bridges the gap between ‘sportswear’ and traditional fashion in a way that performance polyester cannot. Another interesting note is that when you sweat in these cotton blends on the golf course, and the wind begins to blow, there is a cooling eff ect that outperforms most every performance poly.

You will be instantly impressed by both the superior style and ultimate comfort in the ML75 Marble Shark Polo from the Greg Norman Collection. Built with PLAY DRY® moisture-wicking fabric technology and a sophisticated intricate design, it is comprised of 100% Recycled Polyester Interlock.

With the price of quality shirts a factor, how does multi-functionality come into play in regards to creating the shirt that looks and feels good on and off the course?

DT: The ability to wear a shirt on and off the course is crucial, especially when you are spending $100 dollars on a polo. All of our polo’s retail for $89 and below, so fi nding that sweet spot while nailing the material is top priority.

My belief is that you should be able to wear a polo golf shirt with confi dence while playing, but especially while going out with friends or in more formal settings. There is nothing worse than a shirt that doesn’t make you feel confident.

What are the key criteria a consumer should look for when considering the purchase of a shirt that tells them they are buying a premium product? DT: Online shopping is hard for customers

trying out new brands. Free returns helps in easing that risk on the consumers side. Looking into the brands story, the direction and history behind what they are doing can help you get a feel for the quality behind the product. The fit profi le, material makeup, unique purposeful design features are all things that can help inform your decision. Understanding how pricing works, and what the fair value is for an item is hard for an everyday consumer, but doing a bit of research can help in that decision as well. Are you paying a large premium for the name of a well-known brand and sacrifi cing quality.
